MARIA Del REFUGIO PEREZ

As many of you know, our dear mother and Welita peacefully passed on October 11, 2016 in Aurora, Colorado at the age of 83. Family members were by her side, others were rushing to her side, when the very unexpected news of her declining health was discovered. Maria was born and raised in Nuevo Leon Guanajuato.

She was thirteen when her mother our Abuela passed away, and back then, siblings were distributed to their God parents, in essence she did not grow up with her siblings except my Tia Rosa. She was very close to her but often wondered where her siblings were. She would always question individuals with the name “Quintero”, wondering if that was a family member. She left this world not ever finding her siblings. She was very proud of her country of origin and instilled that pride to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She moved to Piedras Negras Coahuila Mexico in 1950’s, where a few years later she met the love of her life, our dad Luis Perez Chavez, and together they provided for and raised five daughters, Leticia Isabel Perez, Maria Teresa Perez, MariaElena Perez, Maria de Lourdes Perez, Jacqueline Perez and Maria Christina Perez (she really likes the name Maria) and two sons Jose Luis Perez and Guillermo Perez. She was so proud of her children’s achievements. Maria survived her Luis by twelve years.

Maria’s love of cooking is legendary to her family and friends. Our best memories are waking up to the smell of hand made tortillas de harina and the best Pozole ever. We will try to keep the “flavor” of her life alive through the recipes we all remember and love. Her favorite hobbies were gardening; she loved to be in her garden, which she made lavish and tropical. She loved to go to the swap meet she could spend hours there, always so full of energy.

Maria was never selfish, always loving and kind was full of wisdom, one of the strongest women we have ever known. Please honor her memory by showing love to one another, help each other, pray for family and friends, be good to your neighbors, and strive for an inner spiritual state.
